Once thought to be the ruins of a settlement of the Aztec people, Aztec Ruins National Monument actually contains the remnants of the homes of an ancestral Pueblo community. Over 500 rooms were once a part of this site, and today the ruins can be closely explored by walking the short trail that runs through the ancient village. A small museum contains some artifacts and educational exhibits, and there are ranger-led talks and walks through the ruins throughout the busy, high-tourism months. Occupied around the 11th through the 13th centuries, CE, the site is now just a few miles northeast of Farmington, on the edge of the town of Aztec.
